Mayfield, Best Buy Chevy Starts 36th at Texas
FT. Worth, TX (Nov. 2, 2007) – Jeremy Mayfield and the No. 66 Best Buy Chevrolet team will start from the 36th position in Sunday’s 500-mile NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway.
Mayfield posted a lap time of 28.484 seconds, at an average speed of 189.580 miles per hour to claim the 18th-row starting position in his second start behind the wheel of the No. 66 Haas CNC Racing entry.
“The car was a little tight, but we learned a lot today,” Mayfield said. “I feel really good about our chances in Sunday’s race. We backed up the time we laid down in practice, and I think we’ll be able to get it dialed in tomorrow during practice.”
The pole position went to Martin Truex, Jr. (No. 1 Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet), one of the 12 drivers competing in the Chase for the Championship. Next on the starting grid is points leader Jeff Gordon (No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet), followed by Juan Pablo Montoya (No. 42 Texaco-Havoline Dodge), Kevin Harvick (No. 29 Pennzoil Chevy) and A.J. Allmendinger (No. 84 Red Bull Toyota). Three other drivers in the Chase will also start in the top-10, including Kurt Busch (No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge), who starts sixth, Denny Hamlin (No. 11 FedEx Chevrolet), who starts seventh and the man who is just nine points behind Gordon in the standings, Jimmie Johnson (No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet), who will roll off from the eighth starting spot.
The race gets underway at 3:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, Nov. 4, and will air live on ABC and PRN Radio affiliates.
